Cotes du Rhone 2010 Vidal-Fleury

Vidal-Fleury has a long history dating back to the 1700's. It was one of the wineries visited by Thomas Jefferson on his trip to France in 1787. Today they are considered one of the most consistent producers in the Rhone Valley. The Guigal family took over several years ago and have completely modernized the operation while still following traditional methods. A slow maceration is done for the the grapes in this Cotes du Rhone red. The blend is 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, 5% Carignan and others. In this vintage in the Southern Rhone, that Robert Parker rates 97 points overall, he said about this wine "Far better, the dark ruby/purple, medium-bodied, attractive 2010 Cotes du Rhone reveals lots of black currant and raspberry fruit intermixed with hints of pepper, spice and earth.

This is a difficult review, because of the four bottles that I have opened, I feel like I have had four distinctly different experiences. The first bottle suffered from cork seepage, (which W.E. gladly and speedily replaced!). I have had a bottle that felt like an immature bordeaux (thin, sharp, unpleasant on the palate, decanting and time did little to improve) all the way to the last bottle I opened which was creamy smooth, rich, and full bodied. Very perplexing wine. I want to like it very much, but much like dating someone with Multiple Personality Disorder, you don't know until you get there which person will show up!

This was a bit of a let down. To be fair we have tried one bottle. It is pleasant but we have another Cotes du Rhine that I found far superior. Still a good value.

  The grapes for this wine are sourced from every part of the Rhone Valley from Syrah in the Northern Rhone to Grenache, Mourvedre and others in the central and southern Rhone. Suffice it to say it's a blend of grapes grown in every soil and micro-climate in the Rhone.

What is the rating for this wine? Josh mentions 97 points in his synopsis in the wine of the day email, but I can't find any other places to verify this 97 point rating.

  The 97 points refers to Robert Parker's (the Wine Advocate) rating of the 2010 vintage overall in the Southern Rhone Valley, not this specific wine. This wine scored 85 with this review from Parker: "The medium-bodied 2010 Cotes du Rhone (65% Grenache and the rest Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan) is made in a lighter style than is typical for this offering, but that may please some consumers who usually find these wines too boisterous and flamboyant. The 2010 is a more racy, laid-back style with decent fruit."
