Zingari 2009 IGT Toscana, Petra
The Moretti family, owners of the famous Bellavista winery in Franciacorta founded Petra in the late 1990's. The estate is in Maremma in the Val di Cornia. They have 240 acres and an incredible modern gravity flow winery designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta. The grapes for this, their most affordable selection, were hand-picked in late August. They undergo a short maceration of a maximum of 7-10 days. Fermentation and extended maceration take place in stainless steel tanks. The Wine Advocate scored it 90 points saying "The 2009 Zingari is a fleshy, generous wine graced with expressive fruit. Sweet, floral notes add length and brightness to the long, caressing finish. This shows great depth without coming across heavy, quite a rarity in Bolgheri. The blend is equal parts Merlot, Sangiovese, Shiraz and Alicante, all aged in steel. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2017."

      The Zingari is super complex and delicious for the price. It has musty, smoky notes plus brooding black cherry. On the palate it's smooth with nice acidity. A great food wine!

          The smell is somewhat salty and very distant from flavour. The aroma is cheap and to my opinion, unpleasant. The taste is close to sour, acidic. The aftertaste is not good, reminds me of cheap porto. It feels like they kept fermentation going for too long. I would advise shorter fermentation cycle maybe by 14 days, depending on temperature. The manufacturer had missed the point. Sorry I am sure Italian wines of this kind can be much better. 2/10 on my score list

              We used to go to Sisteron (where the winery is)
              all the time, this is a non traditional Italian blend.
              I would not call it a "Super Tuscan" (Bolgheri).
              Not bad, but not great. Perhaps some more aging might help.
