Quattro Vicariati (4V) 2005 Trentino Rosso, Cavit

Quattro Vicariati means four parishes because grapes for this bold Northern Italian Bordeaux style blend come from four small, high quality parcels of hillside vineyards planted on both sides of the Adige River. Soils here are rich in clay and limestone and enjoy excellent sun exposure and in this cool climate region these varietals excel. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot are vinified together with a maceration lasting approximately 13-14 days. The wine is then aged for 18 months in small French oak barrels. It's got a spicy, perfumed nose with flavors of blackberry and cherry, licorice and espresso. This 2005 is drinking beautifully now with a few years of bottle age. It's dry and full-bodied but silky textured and with a long finish. This is a wine that drinks at twice it's price.
