About Our Ratings

La Jota 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mt., Napa Valley
The grapes for this 2010 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon were grown in the La Jota Estate vineyard and the Keyes vineyard. La Jota vineyard is located high upon a volcanic Howell Mountain plateau overlooking Napa Valley. The fruit is hand-harvested into small, 30-pound boxes to prevent crushing and brought to the winery for hand sorting. After de-stemming and light crushing, the must is cold soaked for gentle color, flavor and tannin extraction. To bridle the "mountain tannins", small amounts of oxygen are introduced to the wine daily with two "splashing pump-overs" during the primary fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The blend is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in new French oak barrels. Antonio Galloni scored it 92 points saying “The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon shows considerable richness, breadth and power. Dark red berries, grilled herbs, licorice and new leather flesh out in this generous, large-scaled wine. Sweet floral, and mentholated notes are layered into the delineated, tense finish. This is a decidedly soft, gentle wine for Howell Mountain, perhaps because of the addition of 10% Merlot in the blend, which also includes smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.”
