Medalla Real 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva, Maipo Valley, Santa Rita
The Medalla Real wines are Santa Rita's way of highlighting the superior micro-climates of Chile. Maipo Valley in an ideal setting for Cabernet Sauvignon and in fact the grapes for this wine come from their single Alto Jahuel vineyard. Mature vines and naturally low yields make the fruit concentrated and complex. The blend is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon with 5% Cabernet Franc and is aged 14 months in French oak barrels, 33% new. The Wine Spectator scored the previous vintage 90 points. This 2009 is an extremely worthy successor showing bold flavors of black cherry, currants, spicy tobacco and coca. The tannins are remarkably supple and honed for a rich mouthfeel and a lingering finish.
