Grattamacco 2008 Bolgheri Superiore DOC, Super Tuscan Red
Founded in 1977, Grattamacco has 29 acre of vines on a hilltop facing the sea in Tuscany’s beautiful Bolgheri district with calcareous, marl and clay soils. This region has proven to be an ideal setting for Cabernet in Italy. The vineyards are densely planted with 2,000 mature vines per acre, keeping yields low. This, their flagship wine is produced from vines averaging 25 years of age. A blend of 65 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 % Merlot and 15% Sangiovese, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. This wine received raves all around including 94 points from the Wine Advocate who said "The flagship 2008 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco is beautifully delineated and articulate in this vintage. Sweet red cherries, flowers, spices and licorice are some of the notes that emerge from the glass. This is a decidedly bright, elegant Grattamacco that impresses for its fabulous overall balance and understated, classy personality. Firm, yet well integrated tannins and insistent minerality suggest the wine will drink well for many years, although to tell the truth, it is pretty delicious today. Grattamacco is Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2028."
