HHV 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, Block 3, Red Hills, Hawk & Horse
When owner and renowned litigator David Boies took time out from the courtroom, his love of wine and California’s North Coast drove him to create this special winery, located in the Red Hills AVA of Lake County, just north of Napa. The Red Hills are so named for the rocky red volcanic soils found there, and the grapes for this Cab are all grown in that red soil on the Hawk and Horse estate at elevations of up to 2,200 feet. The vineyard is certified organic as well as biodynamic. Boise is working with among others, winemaking veteran Dick Peterson, whose experience with the Atlas Peak winery made him the ideal choice for the mountain vineyards HHV Block 3 is a special project. They set aside just six barrels of 2009 biodynamic estate Cabernet Sauvignon, blended it with a 5% estate Petit Verdot (also biodynamic). The result is a delicious wine of complexity, deeply scented and balanced to compliment your favorite meal or just to enjoy on its own! This is a Boies family favorite. Only 150 cases produced. It won a Gold Medal, "Exceptional" at the International Eco-Friendly Wine Challenge. And the Beverage Testing Institute scored it 91 points saying "Garnet black color. Aromas of black currants, suede, cocoa, and craisin with a supple, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a tangy, vanilla cream and dusty tannin finish. A really nice table wine that will get better with time."
