Cuvelier Los Andes 2010 Coleccion Red Blend, Mendoza
Bernard Cuvelier, owner of Classified Bordeaux Chateau Leoville Poyfere in St. Julien have worked for many years with famed oenologist Michel Rolland. When Rolland went to Argentina to start a winery the Cuvelier accompanied him and purchased vineyards. He now provides grapes for Rolland's Clos La Siete wine and with the help of Rolland and all of their Bordeaux expertise they produce this lush blend, Cuvelier Los Andes. 57% Malbec, 20% Merlot, 11% Syrah, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot aged 12 months in French oak barrels. Wine Spectator scored it 91 points saying "Polished and well-structured, this red offers fine tannins and fresh acidity supporting notes of pure cassis and black cherry puree. Spice, mineral and dark tobacco hints add range to the finish. Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2016."
I was surprised by the delicacy of this wine and its similarity to a well made Bordeaux. The fruit is dark and concentrated as you would expect, but hints of tobacco, chalky minerals and espresso beans add complexity and wonderful texture on the palate. It finishes off dry and long with dusty tannins. Really enjoyed this one...
