Villa Antinori 2011 IGT Toscana
Antinori is a world famous producer of Tuscan wines, their history going back literally centuries. The Villa Antinori is the estate where the Chianti Classico wines have been produced for many years. This wine is a natural progression from their Chianti Classico. As the Antinoris recognized how non-native grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah raised the level of quality of their wine they started blending more and more and finally could no longer use the DOC designation and so it became a Super Tuscan IGT. But the quality they’ve reached is exceptional, especially as they’ve experimented more with aging in small oak barrels. The blend is very consistent for this wine; 55% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% Syrah. Wine Spectator just made it a Smart Buy and scored it 90 points saying "This is fleshy and balanced, with black currant and blackberry notes accented by cedar, tobacco and spice details. Offers intensity and length in a contemporary style. Best from 2015 through 2022."

Comments about Villa Antinori 2011 IGT Toscana:

While each vintage has some variance, the Villa Antonori Toscana always delivers. Lots of dried cherry, coffee and hints of anise on the nose. Great acidity and firm tannins balance out nicely on the palate and lead to an off dry and long finish. Can't go wrong at this price point.

What is an IGT? First time I've encountered this designation. I suppose one could say I'm a novice this, but love the reds and want to learn more.

          A:

IGT stands for Indicazione Geografica Tipica. It is a designation used for wines from a particular region in Italy that are made with grapes other than those designated by the DOC. This wine is from the Chianto Classico zone but because it has only 55% Sangiovese and the rest Cab, Merlot and Syrah it cannot be designated Chianti Classico. IGT is how most Super Tuscan wines are designated.
