Mompertone is produced with 60% Barbera grapes and 40% Syrah grapes, originating from a single vineyard which is 300 meters above sea level. This property overlooks the gentle hills surrounding Basso Monferrato. The wine is aged partly in barrels and partly in barriques for about 10 months, and is then aged for another 6 months in the bottle. An extremely unique blend, this Piedmont red shows real style. The Wine Advocate scored it 92 points saying "The 2009 Monferrato Mompertone is 60% Barbera and 40% Syrah, a combination that as far as I know has not been tried elsewhere in Piedmont. I am not a huge fan of Piedmontese blends, but this wine just works, as it has in every vintage since it was first released in 2003. Dark cherries, tobacco, spices and earthiness are woven together nicely in this deep, immensely pleasing wine. The fruit retains gorgeous suppleness and refinement throughout. This is another strong showing from Prunotto. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2017."
This is one of the more intricate and sturdy Barbera based wines I've had the pleasure of tasting. Dark berry fruit is layered over notes of smoke, cigar box and dried herbs. Great acidity on the palate and firm, drying tanning on the finish stay true to a Piedmont style wine.
