Kuyam 2008 13 Moons, Red Blend, Santa Barbara County
Dave Corey of Core Wine Company has intimate knowledge of Central Coast vineyards. With his company Vital Vines he has worked with dozens of wineries including Laetitia, Barnwood, Beckman, Stolpman, Gainey, Zaca Mesa, Sea Smoke, Le Bon Climat, Sine Qua Non and Fiddlestix, providing technical support for vineyard management and sustainable agriculture. For his own wines he taps into vineyards he's discovered over the years that have unique, high quality grapes. For this Kuyam 13 Moons he sourced a high altitude vineyard in Santa Barbara County, 3,000 feet above sea level, with Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1980. It's a blend of 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 13% Petite Verdot, 12% Cab Franc and 3% Malbec aged in French and American oak barrels for 18 months. The intensity of the old vine fruit drives this Bordeux style blend making it it mouthfilling and dense. The Wine Advocate said "the 2008 Thirteen Moons is inky purple in color and offers up a rich, slightly high-toned bouquet of plum liqueur, violets, licorice and assorted meaty qualities that show more with air. Rich, mouth-filling and medium to full-bodied, with solid density and depth, it-s a borderline outstanding effort that will evolve gracefully for over a decade." And Wine Enthusiast Magazine just scored it 90 points saying "Sour fruits, tobacco pipe resin and toasted coconut combine for a funky but pleasing nose on this blend from Core Wine Co. The flavors are leathery with plum jam, and vibrant acidity runs from front to back." We think it's an incredible find and a super value!

Comments about Kuyam 2008 13 Moons, Red Blend, Santa Barbara County:

One of the best examples I've had of a true "Bordeaux-style" out of California. This could be compared with Abstract, but this goes deeper and for longer without as much punch at the start.

How long do you think I can store this 2008 before it starts to take a downhill turn? Love the virtual tastings!

Glad you enjoy the tasting, I appreciate that. This wine should drink well as it does now for at least 2-3 years. Beyond that is a question.
