Burgess 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, Napa Valley
Napa Valley Pioneers Burgess, was one of the very first wineries to establish vineyards on the steep slopes of Howell Mountain. Since the outset, Burgess has turned out distinctive moutain Cabs, Merlots and Zins that gained admirers and a strong following. This 2010 is benchmark Burgess style. All estate fruit from their vineyards on the Western and Eastern slopes of Howell Mountain. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, 4% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. In the slow and steady 2010 vintage the grapes were able to build beautifully complex flavors while maintaining ideal balance. Aged 22 months in French oak. They used just 20% new barrels. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 92 points saying "The grapes come from the winery’s estate vineyards on Howell Mountain, and you can sense the mountain intensity, both of tannins and fruity concentration. The flavors are impressive, suggesting black currant and mocha, with a minerality that grounds the wine. The tannins will help the wine evolve until 2020–2022, but you can drink it now."
The Burgess Estate Cab was a real standout in a lineup of high-end Cabs we tasted together. 92 points is a tragedy for the quality of this wine! It was an easy 95 to those of us who tasted it. It has the bold fruit you expect from Napa with clear finesse. Can't be missed!
