In 1989 when Antinori group purchased the Prunotto winery they made smart investments, acquiring plots in prominent vineyards in the most exclusive areas including the Bussia vineyard in Barolo and the Bric Turot vineyard in Barbaresco. The result is a continuation of the the quality improvements started long ago by Prunotto and evidenced by this excellent Barbaresco from Bric Turot. The Bric Turot vienyard has soils from the Tortonian-Messinian period rich in manganese, zinc, and borium that are fine-grained particles that allow roots to go deep and draw in the complex array of minerals. 2008 was a superb vintage with beautifully balanced fruit. Selected Nebbiolo grape bunches were destemmed and pressed. Fermentation on the skins lasted approximately fifteen days at controlled temperature and the malolactic fermentation finished before the beginning of winter. The wine was aged in both large 50 hectoliter oak casks and in small 60 gallon oak barrels (used once previously) for twelve months. An additional twelve months of bottle aging let the wine soften and become more expressive. Upon release the Wine Spectator scored it 90 points and the Wine Advocate scored it 92 saying "Firm yet well-integrated tannins provide the backbone as the 2008 Barbaresco Bric Turot opens up in the glass. I find lovely inner sweetness and perfume in the dark fruit, although the 2008 is several years away, at a minimum, from providing true pleasure. Hints of spices and flowers wrap around the vibrant, juicy finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020." Now with a few additional years in the bottle the wine is starting to show its true colors.
