Lucienne 2011 Pinot Noir, Smith Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands
The Hahn family's founder Nicky Hahn’s middle name is ‘Lucien’, and Hahn produces limited-production, vineyard-designated Lucienne Pinot Noirs from estate in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey County. Their 131-acre Smith Vineyard planted at 590 to 1,280 feet boasts eastern exposure above the fog line for a long growing season. Its well-draining soils are formed primarily from alluvial materials. A few exotic Pinot Noir clones (like Jardini, Calera and Mt. Eden) have been spectacularly successful in this vineyard, lending additional nuance and complexity to this wine. Aged 12 months in French oak barrels. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 90 points saying "This is the kind of Pinot Noir that’s made the variety so popular. While it’s not an ager, it gives you everything that Pinot has to offer—vibrant acidity, a smooth, silky texture and rich flavors of raspberries, cherries and brown sugar, leading to a dry, spicy finish."
