New York Times writer Eric Asimov proclaimed Joseph Carr a “producer to watch,” ranking his wines alongside the likes of Far Niente, Clos du Val, Heitz, Grgich Hills and Rubicon. And he has not disappointed, turning out excellent examples of Napa Cab and many other great wines. Sine 2010 Mr. Carr has been working with Aaron Pott, Food and Wine Magazine Winemaker of the year. The highly sought-after Mr. Pott was also profiled in the Wall Street Journal as "The Mouth Behind Some of Napa's Best Wines". Together they have produced wines that offer a district level of sophistication and value, and reflect Potts philosophy of winemaking with little intervention. Grapes are sourced from top growers around Napa that Carr has built up relationships with. The outstanding 2012 vintage brought deeply flavored fruit. Grapes were all handpicked at the peak of flavor development, then crushed and cold soaked for 24 hours followed by a 10-15 day maceration. 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Merlot, the wine was aged 16-18 months in 75% French and 25% American oak. It shows ripe fig cherry pie, forest floor and cocoa on the nose. The palate brings bold black currant earthy chocolate, cherry dried fruit, nutmeg and clove with supple but vibrant tannins and a lingering finish. A delicious wine, especially for the price!
