Yealands 2013 Pinot Noir, Single Vineyard Estate, Marlborough
Peter Yealands has developed seven of his own vineyard sites in Marlborough and many more for wineries in New Zealand whose wine he produces. But with over 3,600 acres of family owned vineyards he is now producing and bottling his own wines. The range includes single parcels of Estate grown fruit to regional blends from New Zealand’s world renowned Marlborough region. This wine is his single vineyard estate Pinot Noir. Sourced from his Seaview Vineyard in the Awatere Valley. It’s exposed to some of the toughest growing conditions in Marlborough; high sunshine and wind, cool nights and low rainfall which produces a smaller, thicker skinned berry with intense fruit flavors. The low yielding Pinot Noir (Dijon Clone 777) was picked at peak ripeness. The grapes were cold macerated for six days before being warmed and inoculated with selected yeast. A fast, fermentation proceeded with regular hand plunging to craft a wine with elegance and structure. 20% of the wine was aged in new French oak barrels, with the balance aging into second year French oak. 2013 was a sensational growing season in Marlborough and this wine shows it. A Gold Medal winner in the Berlin Wine Competition and many favorable reviews including this from the Daily Mail “I know you shouldn’t judge a wine by its label, but this bottle looks stunning and the wine inside is equally dreamy, too. A succulent, black cherry-soaked pinot, with a heavenly texture and some glorious spice notes, this is a wonderful treat and a lovely wine to drink with roast chicken.” And this from Michael Coopers New Zealand Buyer's Guide “Generous, savory, silky red with full, bright color and substantial body. Already enjoyable but well worth cellaring, it has strong, plummy, slightly spicy flavors, gentle tannins and good complexity. 4 Stars” Wine Spectator just scored it 92 points saying "Plush and supple, brimming with flavors of raspberry coulis,
cherry, rosemary, dried rose petal, forest floor and smoky black
tea. Harmonious, focused and pure, with terrific persistence on
the finish, where pepper and citrus peel hints chime in. Drink now
Classic NZ Pinot nose featuring bright cherry, raspberry and ample dried herbal notes with hints of black pepper. A mouthwatering entry leads to a well balanced and structured mid-palate leaving the dense fruit, spice and hints of tobacco on the finish...just lovely.
