About Our Ratings

Gaja 2010 Brunello di Montalcino, Pieve Santa Restituta
Angelo Gaja bought a controlling interest in the Pieve Santa Restituta in 1994. All his energy and expertise have been brought to bear on this magnificent estate with restoration of the namesake 4th century church and construction of the state of the art cellars completed in 2005. The impressive, modern winery is surrounded by 40 acres of beautiful vineyards all at some 1100 feet above sea level with a gentle south west exposure. Pieve Santa Restituta's Brunello di Montalcino is produced from a selection of estate-grown grapes from the four non-contiguous vineyards with vines averaging 25 years of age. The outstanding 2010 vintage brought incredible quality and character to these grapes. Each vineyard parcel underwent separate fermentation and maceration in stainless steel tanks for approximately three weeks. Afterwards the wines were blended together prior to aging in casks. Full bodied and rich with true expression of Sangiovese. James Suckling scored it 97 points saying "Fabulous aromas of plums, prunes, Christmas pudding and berries. Full body, ultra fine tannins and a long intsense finish. Polished and refined. Give this two to three years to soften." Limited!

I put it on the shelf to open in a couple of years. I anticipate a great wine in 3 to 5 years.

When will this be drinkable?
Allan S on Jul 28, 2015
BEST ANSWER: One of the things that makes Brunello such a world class wine is that the DOC requires it to be aged before release. Think about it, we're drinking 2012 and 2013 Napa Cabs and Rhones, Bordeaux and most other reds. Meanwhile 2010 Brunello has just been released. This wine drinks beautifully now if you decant it for 15-30 minutes. I do expect however that it will continue to evolve over the next 5-10 years. A 2005 of this same wine was absolutely gorgeous when I opened it in 2013 and this 2010 is a more substantial wine.
