Ridge 2012 Three Valleys Zinfandel Blend, Sonoma County
Ridge Vineyards is an historic winery located in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Known for their Monte Bello Cabernet which placed 5th in the famous Judgment in Paris tasting, they’re celebrated for their incredible Zinfandels which are sourced from many single vineyard locations around California. Proprietor and Winemaker Paul Draper focuses on expressing the individual terroir for these wines, but with so many fans out there of Ridge Zin, Draper realized that he needed a wine that was more available both in quantity and price. This Sonoma County Three Valleys is that wine. First released in 2001, the wine contains grapes from a number of Sonoma vineyards. This vintage it’s six with very low yields and old vines. The vine age was approximately 20% eighty to
one hundred years old, 50% thirty-five to forty-five years and 30% seven to fourteen years. The final blend was 79% Zinfandel, 12% Carignane, 8% Petite Sirah and 1% Alicante Bouschet aged 10 months in air-dried American oak barrels. Robert Parker scored this 2012 90 points and said "The 2012 Proprietary Red Three Valleys is composed of 82% Zinfandel, 12% Petite Sirah and the rest Carignan and Alicante Bouchet. This sexy wine (14.2% natural alcohol) reveals lots of raspberry and black cherry fruit, medium to full body, beautiful purity, delicate notes of spice, and no hint of oak. Enjoy this fleshy red over the next 3-4 years."
