Guado Al Tasso 2012 Cont' Ugo, Merlot, IGT Toscana
Like Ornellaia's Masseto this new release from Guado al Tasso is 100% Merlot. The Tuscan coastal region of Bolgheri has proven to be an ideal spot for growing Merlot of the utmost quality. Grapes were sourced from the over 100 acres of Merlot in the estate’s vineyards. After hand picking and a careful selection in the cellar, the grapes fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for a period of 25 days. Fermentation temperatures were regulated on the basis of the ripeness level of the various lots. The different styles of Merlot went separately into oak barrels for aging, 30% new oak. After eight months of oak aging, the wine was blended and was then put back into barrels for a final four months of aging. After a further six months of bottle aging the wine was released. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 92 and Antonio Galloni scored it 93 points saying "The 2012 Cont'Ugo, 100% Merlot from the Antinori family's Guado al Tasso property in Bolgheri, is shaping up to be another beauty. Mocha, black cherries, menthol, licorice and spices are all woven together gracefully. The rich, resonant finish is classic Bolgheri."
