Villa Antinori 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva (Gold Label)
Marchesi Antinori adds Villa Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva to the Villa Antinori wines. The all new, modern Antinori Chianti Classico Cellars in Bargino, are the place where this wine ferments and ages. Thus 2011 is only the second vintage of this Riserva and it is a blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot. The juice was gently pressed into small French and Hungarian oak barrels for 12 months of aging. It has an intense ruby red in color with fruit and spice aromas. Light touches from the oak aging underscore the cherry and red berry notes that are typical of the Sangiovese grape. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 91 points saying "This delicious wine opens with aromas of violet, iris, underbrush, black fruit and cinnamon-spice notes. The concentrated palate delivers a solid core of rich black cherry accented with notes of black pepper and Mediterranean herbs alongside firm tannins that carry on to the finish."
I was so happily surprised with the wine. I am familiar with the Villa Antinori name but hesitated to serve it at Christmas dinner. I loved it and so did the family. Initially I hesitated to order it but the young man touted it and reassured me it was exceptional. I am pleased to say he was accurate. You did not only sell me the case of wine you made a customer. Happy New Year
