Villa Antinori 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva (Gold Label)
Marchesi Antinori adds Villa Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva to the Villa Antinori wines. The all new, modern Antinori Chianti Classico Cellars in Bargino, are the place where this wine ferments and ages. Thus 2011 is only the second vintage of this Riserva and it is a blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot. The juice was gently pressed into small French and Hungarian oak barrels for 12 months of aging. It has an intense ruby red in color with fruit and spice aromas. Light touches from the oak aging underscore the cherry and red berry notes that are typical of the Sangiovese grape. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 91 points saying "Made with Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, this opens with aromas of red berry, plum, violet and whiff of cedar. The elegantly structured, savory palate delivers juicy black cherry, clove, ground pepper and grilled herb alongside fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. It's well balanced and already accessible."

I was so happily surprised with the wine. I am familiar with the Villa Antinori name but hesitated to serve it at Christmas dinner.
I loved it and so did the family.
Initially I hesitated to order it but the young man touted it and reassured me it was exceptional.
I am pleased to say he was accurate. You did not only sell me the case of wine you made a customer. Happy New Year

This is a pleasant, easy drinking Italian wine, however, I really do not know whether I prefer this Riserva or the regular Antinori Chianti, for to me, they are both very much on par with one another.

What type of wine is this. Is it like a cab?
lionel l on Jan 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Chianti's come from the Sangiovese grape - the Tuscany region of Italy.
It is a lighter, fruity wine compared to most cabs. If you are looking for a robust, full bodied dry wine, chianti is not the answer. But as far as the Villa Antinori goes, it is among the best Chianti's you can buy in that price range. The vineyard has been in the same family for over 26 generations so they know what they are doing. Enjoy.
