Charles Krug 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Family Reserve, Howell Mtn. Napa Valley
Charles Krug has two vineyards on Howell Mountain growing primarily Cabernet Sauvignon. Rocky Ridge Vineyard has 9 acres of Cab planted in 2004 and the Cold Springs Vineyard has 24 acres of Cab planted in 2007. The vines reached an ideal level of maturity last year so this is just the second vintage of this Family Reserve. The blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot aged 20 months in French oak barrels. Robert Parker scored it 91 points saying "Notes of graphite, charcoal and earth set it apart from the 2012 Generations. It also offers notes of mocha, blackcurrants and black cherries in its rich, medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced personality. It is another impressive effort from Charles Krug to enjoy over the next 10-15 years." and James Suckling scored it 92 as did the Wine Spectator who said "Aromas of sweet tobacco, black currant and hints of asphalt or lead pencil. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a delicious finish. Polished tannins here. Drink or hold."
