Wente 2014 Chardonnay, Eric's Small Lot, Livermore
Normally a Tasting Room only item Wente Small Lot wines are selected from specific Estate vineyard blocks that are carefully farmed, sustainably grown and hand-harvested. Fifth generation Winemaker, Karl D. Wente carefully handcrafts small production wines to create unique, artisan-style wines. Karl oversees every step of the process. The grapes are gently pressed and placed in small-batch fermenters. Traditional methods, such as wild yeast fermentation, and weekly batonnage (the stirring of the lees), are hallmarks of the program. Eric's is unoaked Chardonnay, a favored style of fourth generation winegrower, Eric Wente. The wine was fermented in stainless steel and then aged on the less giving it richness and body without imparting oak tannins. Wine Enthusiast Magazine made this an "Editors Choice" scoring it 92 points and saying "Layered and luxurious, this medium-bodied wine tastes ripe and flavorful but not overdone, melding bright fruit flavors, almond and vanilla accents and a creamy texture that extends the finish. Suitable for a special occasion, this wine shows off the grape’s inherent complexity."
