Seven Devils 2013 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Carlton Cellars
Dave Grooters has a prime estate vineyard with well-drained Wellsdale sedimentary soils located right between Tony Soter's and Ken Wright's vineyards in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA of Willamette Valley. All the grapes for this wine are from the estate vineyard and Dave, who learned his craft working for Ken Wright for many years, does the honors as winemaker. Mature ten year old vines planted on well-drained Wellsdale sedimentary soil. The grapes are all hand selected and 2013 was yet another excellent vintage. Aging was in 100% French oak for 10 months. The Oregon Wine Press said "A mighty tasty middleweight with layers of interlacing flavors, including caramel, stone fruit, oak vanillin and a touch of tannin. Finishes long and luxurious." and Great Northwest Wine rated it "Excellent" saying "It opens with elegant aromas of red currant, dried strawberry and subtle baking spices and follows up with a graceful presentation of cassis, dark raspberry and more dried strawberry flavors." I have purchased many pinot noir's from wine express but this is the first one we cannot drink. It is very pale for a pinot, and almost a bit sour tasting. Can't drink it and wouldn't give it to anyone. Very disappointed.
This Seven Devils has become a perennial favorite here, and with great reason. Classic bright cherry and dried raspberry on the nose with subtle baking spice and mineral notes. The acidity is lively with some earthy and smoky notes coming through on the palate. Tough to find a better WV Pinot for the price.
This came in the Pinot Sampler. I normally would not try a set of wines "blindly". But I trusted Wine Express. Very disappointed in this one, opened this bottle first. Found it to be watery, bland, sour. Used it in a tomato sauce and I don't think it helped even there.
