Diora 2014 Pinot Noir, La Petite Grace, Monterey
Diora ‘La Petite Grace” Pinot Noir is the latest creation from Delicato Family Wines, owners of the impressive San Bernabe Vineyard in Monterey county. Diora features grapes selected from Block 202, the northernmost Pinot Noir block in the massive 5,000 acre San Bernabe, where the grapes are most complex and expressive. The balance of the blend integrates structure and black fruit nuances from grapes grown in the famed Santa Lucia Highlands. The wine aged 10 months in 90% French oak, 8% American oak, 2% Hungarian oak. After 10 months in barrel, the final blend was made with the addition of 2% Grenache and 2% Syrah. The wine shows intense garnet color with aromas of black cherries, brown sugar and mocha. Round, soft and full-bodied with excellent weight in the mid-palate, layers of black cherry, dark chocolate, spice and coffee bean unfold with earthy undertones of mushroom and truffle. The striking package with gold sealing wax is impressive enough, but wait til you taste what’s in the bottle. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 2014 92 points saying "This is a dense and very heavy take on the grape, but done with elegance and style, showing vanilla cookie, clove and deep anise spice atop the black cherry of the nose. Gingerbread, red cinnamon and Christmas spice liven up the baked red plum fruit of the palate, which is laced with rich oak flavorings. Not a dainty wine."

I am concerned about the addition of syrah to this wine. Will the pepper flavors of syrah detract from the classic pinot flavor? It seems like a new trend to blend pinot noir with some other varietals. Why these, and not, for example, gamay noir?

BEST ANSWER: Actually, I think what they're going for is a Pinot Noir with a little more heft i.e., deeper color, fuller body. And the reality is they're able to do that here while maintaining the Pinot character. The tiny bit of Syrah doesn't stand out. You would not mistake it for another varietal, it has the the tell-tale black, cherry, strawberry, cola notes that say Pinot Noir.
