Antica 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon,Townsend Vyd., Napa Valley
The Antinori Estate is in the Atlas Peak Distict of Napa Valley, the same region as the famous Stagecoach vineyard. The estate vineyards are planted up to 1,800 feet above the Napa Valley floor, in the volcanic soil series Boomer Gravelly Loam, Perkins Gravelly Loam and Aiken Loam. This wine comes from their single Townsend Vineyard. Set high on the ridge overlooking Rector Canyon and Napa Valley some 1600 feet below, this 24-acre vineyard is planted on a west-facing slope of well-drained, volcanic soils. Townsend Vineyard’s architecture is based on Antinori’s philosophy for new vineyards in Tuscany: high-density vine spacing ensures low production of fruit per vine, the vine rows are aligned from east to west to achieve ideal sun exposure, and the vines are trained low to the ground to take advantage of radiant heat from the volcanic rock and soils. Finally,
rootstock and clones of Cabernet Sauvignon were chosen to complement Townsend’s terroir, ensuring the best fruit expression. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 18 months in French oak, Antonio Galloni scored this 95 points saying "The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Townsend Vineyard is very pretty. Graphite, mocha, spices and dark plums all blossom in a textured, expressive Cabernet Sauvignon that will drink well for the next 10-15 years. The addition of 5% Cabernet Franc in the blend adds gorgeous aromatic nuance, but this remains a supple, forward Cabernet best enjoyed while the fruit retains its juiciness."
