Freemark Abbey 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
Back in 1976 Freemark Abbey Cabernet was one of the wines in the famous Judgment in Paris Tasting. It's been a Napa Valley staple for decades and today Freemark Abbey is owned by the Jess Jackson family and has a renewed focus and vitality. Robert Parker just wrote "Freemark Abbey has hit pay dirt big-time, with plenty of terrific offerings that are being released now and early in 2016. Winemaker Ted Edwards seems to go from strength to strength and readers looking for top-flight Napa wines priced under $50.00 need to check out several of these immediately, as I’m sure they’ll be huge crowd-pleasers." This 2012 Cabernet is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2 % Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec aged 25 months in 40% new French and American oak barrels. Parker scored it 93 points and said "An absolutely fabulous value is the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa. This comes from multiple sources and there are 46,000+ cases of it. A stunning Cabernet Sauvignon and a classic example of Napa viticulture, this blend of 75.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, was aged just over two years in oak. Loads of sweet blackcurrant fruit, cocoa, a touch of toast, earth, and baking spice are all present in this wine that has terrific fruit on the attack and mid-palate, a full-bodied mouthfeel, no hard edges and a luscious, opulent, gorgeously pure style. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. Although I wouldn’t be surprised to see it last longer. For old-time reader/subscribers, this might be the modern-day equivalent of the great 1974 Souverain Vintage Selection that I recommended back in the late 1970s and is still going strong today.

One sip of this wine and sobriety will be defeated!
At $60.00 I would have scored this wine at 3.5, but when factoring the sale price, this wine is an easy 5 of 5.

Despite a (according to my wife) too full wine room, I may order more of this just because of the value.

Needs a couple of years
I like the 2012 Freemark Abbey but it seems a little young and raw - a lot of initial punch that I hope will settle down with some age.

Shipped in extreme heat
Just opened the first of 12 bottles. Taste is ok, but definitely impacted by shipping in over 90 degree weather.
