Au Contraire 2014 Chardonnay, Russian River Valley
The first domestic brand developed by the Taub family, owners of leading importer Palm Bay International, Au Contraire represents the family’s return to their roots in the California wine business. This wine is sourced from a number of Russian River Valley vineyards from the heart of the Valley to the Western Edges of Green Valley touching Sonoma Coast. The variety of growing sites adds layers of ripeness, fruit flavors and complexity. Fruit was hand-sorted and gently whole cluster pressed. The juice was settled off the heavy lees and split between stainless steel and barrel fermentation to highlight the flavors. Fermented was followed by lees aging and light lees stirring for 4 months in oak. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 93 points saying "This is a pretty, floral and balanced wine, elegantly austere in preserved lemon, yuzu and grapefruit, with richer overtones that build on the medium-body toward the lengthy finish. A wine made for the table, it’ll pair well and widely, though it can also stand deliciously on its own."
This has a little bit of everything for everyone. Crisp and lively acidity along with green apple, pear and melon fruit on the somewhat weighted palate. Just enough oak to give it that buttery and smoky undertones, with a long and delicate finish.
