MacPhail 2012 Pinot Noir, Dutton Ranch, Russian River Valley
MacPhail has created a cult following for their intensely flavored power-packed Pinot Noirs. This is the first vintage of MacPhail Dutton Ranch Vineyard. John produced Dutton Pinot in the past under the Sequana label but now instead has broadened his MacPhail banner to include these outstanding wines. This 2012 it's actually a blend of 2 of the Dutton's vineyards: Thomas Road and Manzana. Both of these vineyards are in the cool Green Valley sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley. The grapes were hand picked and hand sorted twice. A cold soak was followed by indigenous yeast fermentation. The wine was racked into barrels where it aged on the lees with weekly stirring. After 11 months sur lie in French Oak, 44% new, it was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Pinot Report scored it 90 points saying "Medium-deep ruby color; deep, ripe cherry and cola aromas; rich, ripe red cherry flavors with spice and cola; silky texture; good structure and balance; long finish. Spicy, silky Pinot with nice flavors."
