NBA star Yao Ming is a huge celebrity in his homeland China. With the tremendous surge in wine drinking in China it was only natural that his next career should be that of a vintner and so Yao Family wines of Napa Valley was started. And what a start! Yao's wines since his first release have received high scores and rave reviews and this latest from the classic 2013 vintage is another is an absolute slam dunk! A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It was aged in 65% new barrels; 100% French oak for 18 months. James Suckling scored it an outstanding 96 points calling it "A solid cabernet with a depth of spicy, plum and tile aromas and flavors. Full body, firm and chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Shows poise and real structure. Give it two to five years to soften. Try in 2018." Robert Parker said "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is a beauty, with notes of graphite, blackberry and blueberry liqueur and licorice, excellent integration of wood, tannin and alcohol (14.7%), gives this wine a full-bodied, opulent and seductive mouthfeel. This is outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 10-15 years." On Sale!!!
Better than the '10 and '12, this new vintage of the Yao Ming is in a word... stunning. The deep, dark fruit core carries the wine from start to finish. But what rounds this wine out are the alluring vanilla, cocoa and floral notes that transcend from the nose to the plush and pleasing palate. This one finishes big and long, so enjoy it now but this one is only going to improve over the next decade+
The 2013 Yao Ming Cabernet was of excellent quality. There was a strong, fruity presence with a splendid ,velvet-like body. The tannins were subtle and made for a truly harmonious wine. Since the wine was shipped to us and arrived quite warm, I was afraid that the contents woould be damaged. Fortunately, that was not the case. I would certainly recommend the Yao Ming . Please inform the shippers that they need to keep the wines in a ccol place.
