Mullan Road 2013 Red Blend, Cakebread, Columbia Valley
Mullan Road Cellars is a project led by Dennis Cakebread of Cakebread Cellars to produce first class wines from the unique microclimates of Washington State. Drawn by the high quality of wines coming out of the Walla Walla, Dennis and winemaker Aryn Morell worked with the famed Seven Hills Vineyard on the southern edge of the Walla Walla Valley appellation as well as vineyards in the soon-to-be-recognized Royal Slope appellation to craft this powerful yet elegant Bordeaux-style Red Blend 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. The Wine Advocate scored it 92-94 saying "Tasted out of barrel and a perfumed, floral, lively blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and a splash of Malbec, the 2013 Columbia Valley Red Wine offers ample black raspberry, sweet cassis, spring flowers and sappy herb-like aromas and flavors. Coming from a mix of Stillwater Creek, Seven Hills and Lawrence vineyards, this rock-star barrel sample has medium to full-bodied richness, fabulous purity and fine tannin that frame the finish. It should be relatively civilized on release, yet evolve gracefully for 15 years." This just receive a Best in Class Double Gold in the 2016 Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition, They said "Produced in Walla Walla, this Bordeaux-style red blend is made by Dennis Cakebread of Napa Valley fame. Once past the gate of forboding tannins, patient and understanding consumers will be rewarded with a cabernet-based blend outstanding for its assertiveness, complexity and persistence."
