Castello Di Buttrio 2011 Mon Rouge, Rosso, Friuli Colli Orientali
In this region of Italy, Alessandra Felluga bears such a famous surname that it is at once a great privilege and a great responsibility. The daughter of famed vintner Marco Felluga, Alessandra learned from a legend and at Castello di Buttrio she brings her knowledge and her own sensibility to create compelling Friuli wines. She strives to produce not only the traditional white wines that the region is famous for but also superb reds like this Mon Rouge. A blend of 65% Merlot, 20% Refosco and 15% Cabernet, the grapes are grown on terraced plots on the steep hillsides. This way they can take advantage of maximum sun exposure. The grapes are allowed to hang late it the season with frequent tests and tastings for ideal sugar/acid balance. Then harvested by hand, destemmed, inoculated and macerated for 7-9 days. The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks for 12 months on the lees. The lees are stirred frequently to bring the added flavors and texture into solution for the finished wine. The wine shows a plush texture with notes of blackberry, cherry and cocoa. Smooth and supple with a good balance of acidity and lingering finish. A stunning value.
