Austin Hope 2013 Syrah, Hope Family Vyd., Paso Robles
Austin Hope has a simple goal: to make spectacular, estate grown Syrah and Grenache. Aiming that high requires a dedication to quality at every step in the winemaking process. From the care taken in planting the Hope Family Vineyard, to the choice of coopers for barrels. Of course it helps to have a perfect growing location in the Templeton Gap district of Paso Robles. Here, the cool ocean air tempers the family estate vineyard and allows the Syrah grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. Four Syrah clones are planted in separate blocks in the all of which are high-density spaced, and the vines are managed carefully to keep cluster counts low, resulting in fruit with great intensity and rich berry flavors. Grapes were fermented separately by vineyard block for 10 days then the wines were aged for 12 months in 100% new French oak barrels. The final blend was assembled and placed back into barrels for three more months prior to bottling. This 2013 scored 93 points in Wine Enthusiast Magazine who said "Dense aromas of caramel-laced fudge and hickory smoked meats on the base of blackberry coulis show on another lavish, delicious bottling by one of the regionís more stylish producers. Framed in a chalky structure, the smoked meat element consumes the palate, which also shows black cherries, vanilla ice cream, caramel and rich milk chocolate flavorings." On Sale!
