Founded in 1977, Matanzas Creek produces limited quantities of Chardonnay produces limited quantities of Chardonnay with fruit that comes from sustainably-farmed, estate vineyards scattered throughout the mild interior and cool coastal AVAs of Sonoma county. For this wine, fruit was sourced 75% from vineyards high above the Alexander Valley and 25% from their Bennett Valley Estate vineyard. The Bennet Valley fruit contributes a bright citrus character and granitic minerality to the power of the mountain fruit of Alexander Valley. Each block was carefully selected, fermented and tasted individually to reflect their diverse soils, sun exposure, clones, root stocks and altitude. 100% fermented and aged in fine-grained French oak barrels (38% new) for nine months. It underwent an indigenous and full malolactic fermentation. It shows aromas of apple cobbler, candied Meyer lemon, grilled peach, kumquat, roasted marshmallows and warm panetone. Warm hints of vanilla co-mingle with fragrances of cedar and toasty oak. An unctuous and texture, rich mouth feel, and perfectly balanced acidity make this wine as satisfying as it is compelling.
