Il Grigio 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, San Felice
Wine #1 in the Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Wines of 2015
At San Felice, respect for the tradition of Chianti is united with avant-garde viticultural research and experimentation, carried out on 43 acres of vineyards, in conjunction with the Department of Horticulture of the University of Florence. The most extraordinary part of this is the "Bank of Vines", which consists of a five acre vineyards called the Vitiarium where approximately 278 lesser-known Tuscan vines are being cultivated.
The fermentation of the grapes takes place in a modern vat-room equipped with stainless-steel tanks and more than 60 Slavonian oak casks made by master coopers. Il Grigio Gran Selezione is the result of painstaking selection of their best Sangiovese. Cultivated in five zones of excellence, combined with a 20% complement made up of five exceptional native varieties brought back to prominence in the San Felice Vitiarium: Abrusco, Pugnitello, Malvasia Nera, Ciliegiolo and Mazzese.
Wine Enthusiast selected this as their Number One Wine of the Year for 2015. Scoring it 95 points they said "A fantastic combination of power and finesse, this opens with aromas of under brush, ripe plum, truffle, leather, smoke and a balsamic note. The firm, delicious palate delivers fleshy black cherry, crushed raspberry, cinnamon and mocha. Velvety tannins support the juicy flavors." Extremely Limited!
