About Cotes du Rhone 2013 Vidal-Fleury

Vidal-Fleury has a long history dating back to the 1700's. It was one of the wineries visited by Thomas Jefferson on his trip to France in 1787. Today they are considered one of the most consistent producers in the Rhone Valley. The Guigal family took over several years ago and have completely modernized the operation while still following traditional methods. A slow maceration is done for the the grapes in this Cotes du Rhone red. The blend is 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and 5% Carignan. The aging is split for this wine. 70% ages in the tanks on the lees for added texture and complexity while 30% goes into oak barrels. After aging the wine is bottled unfined. This 2013 was a Platinum Medal winner with a score of 95 points in the Decanter World Wine Awards! They said "Enjoys a deep nose with white pepper, graphite notes and bright red fruits. The palate is powerful and intense with black cherry and dark, muscular berry fruit, crisp acid and some neat, grippy, slightly salted tannins. The finish is long with berries and spice." An Absolute Steal!!
