Gait Zinfandel comes from a blend of three Calistoga vineyards with vines ranging in age from 20 years to over 115 years old. Calistoga is a sub-region in Napa Valley and it's distinguished by its volcanic soil, high temperatures up to 100 °F during the day, and cool nights during the growing season due to breezes from the Russian River, causing the highest diurnal temperature variation in the Valley. These are ideal conditions for growing Zinfandel which thrives in the heat but needs the balancing effects of the cool nights to maintain it's bright berry character. The grapes were 100% destemmed but just a small percentage were crushed. Cold soaked for three days before inoculation, fermentation and maceration time ranged from 10-25 days before being pressed. The wine was then aged in 100% American oak barrels for 18 months to add another layer of complexity and allow the tannins to softens. The wine shows cocoa, espresso, cedar and blackberry on the nose. On the palate it's dense and rich but with bright, balancing acidity. It shows notes of raspberry, dried blueberries, figs, coffee and spice. The finish lingers with dark chocolate and blackberry. On Sale!!!
This wine is supremely intense on the nose as the blue and blackberry, vanilla and sweet spice jump right out of the glass. It's as lush and rich as you would expect, but has a sense of refinement and balance boasting its quality production. This is one you can fully enjoy now and over the next several years as well.
