Old Zinfandel vines with thick, twisted gnarled trunks and vines shooting up and out in all directions are the inspiration for Gnarly Head Zin. The grapes are sourced from vineyards in Lodi, primarily the Mokelumne River area, with some the oldest Zinfandel vines in all of California. 35 to 80 year old vines are hand-harvested for this rich, dense, jammy Zin. The wine is aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels, giving it a distinct spiciness to complement the pure fruit and making it an ideal match for zesty foods. This 2015 scored 92 points in the Ultimate Wine Challenge. They called it "Excellent, Highly Recommended" and said "An expressive nose of ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit, brown spice, and purple flowers. On the palate, cassis, black pepper, and vanilla come through. A silky body with soft tannins and well-integrated acidity." A perpetual Best Buy!
