Twomey Cellars by Silver Oak 2012 Merlot, Napa Valley
When Silver Oak winery wanted to expand they purchased a prime vineyard in Southeastern Napa Valley, the Soda Canyon Ranch. They discovered that amongst the vines planted in this well-drained volcanic soil vineyard, were exceptional French clones of Merlot that exhibited distinct character and intensity. All the grapes are sourced from this unique single vineyard, where the temperate climate brings low yields and intense black-fruit character. World-renowned winemaker, Jean-Claude Berrouet, joined Twomey as Winemaking Consultant in January of 2012 to work closely with our Director of Winemaking, Daniel Baron, on the production of their Merlot. Berrouet brings 50 years of winemaking experience, including 44 vintages with the incomparable Chateau Pétrus. A blend of 80% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, the wine is aged 13 months in 32% new French oak barrels and is hand racked in a painstaking process from barrel to barrel. This eliminates the need for filtration, creating a wine with a purity and vibrancy that's unsurpassed. Wine Enthusiast Magazine made it a "Cellar Selection" with a 92 point scored they said "A classically made expression of the variety, with 16% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, this wine is soft and easygoing, rounded with a subtle grip of black plum, cherry and dark chocolate. Full bodied, it exhibits a tension of leather and black tea with dried herb on the finish, begging for pepper steak, the texture soft and silky. Drink now through 2020."
