Seven Devils 2014 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Carlton Cellars
Dave Grooters has a prime estate vineyard with well-drained Wellsdale sedimentary soils located right between Tony Soter's and Ken Wright's vineyards in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA of Willamette Valley. All the grapes for this wine are from the estate vineyard and Dave, who learned his craft working for Ken Wright for many years, does the honors as winemaker. Mature ten year old vines, the grapes are all hand selected and the wine was aged in 100% French oak for 10 months. 2014 was an absolutely monumental vintage. Wine Business reported that "The 2014 vintage in Oregon may be remembered as the vintage of a lifetime. From bud break through harvest, growers and winemakers throughout the state experienced an almost ideal growing season that delivered a record amount of exceptional, balanced fruit." This wine won a Double Gold Medal in the 2016 Cascadia Wine Competition. They said "a wine with cedar and spice aromas layered over cherries, red currants and a tiny bit of sweet blueberry. The fruit lingers from midpalate through a close of firm acidity and well-managed tannins." and it just scored a 92 points in the BTI World Wine Championship. They said "Dark garnet color. Aromas and flavors of spiced cherries and beets and praline with a silky, lively, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a sleek, engaging, medium-length clementine, nut skin, and earth finish with light oak. A light, silky pinot with pure balanced flavors."
