Chateauneuf du Pape 2014 La Bernardine, M. Chapoutier
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is known for its amazing soil, composed of large rolled stones from the bed of the Rhône river. These stones hold the heat of the day's sun and warm the vines in the brisk evening air. Chapoutier's La Bernardine is quite unique in that it is made up of only one to three grape varieties, primarily Grenache, when 13 are allowed by AOC law. With this unique approach, biodynamic farming and low-yield vineyards, Chapoutier produces a rich, flavorful wine with moderate tannins. Vinous Media scored this 90-92 saying "Vivid red. A high-pitched, spice-accented bouquet of ripe red and dark berries, peppery spices and minerals, accompanied by a strong potpourri quality. Supple and expansive, offering juicy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that put on weight and become sweeter with air. In a plush, seamless style, displaying strong finishing thrust and smooth, slowly building tannins that add shape."
