Founded in 1978 by Tim Slater, a retired software engineer, in a hidden corner of the southwestern Santa Clara Valley, Sarah’s Vineyard produces handmade wines using traditional techniques. Tucked in the Santa Cruz Mountain foothills near a windy mountain pass, the vineyard enjoys coastal microclimate of foggy mornings, sunny afternoons tempered by strong ocean breezes, and chilly nights that are ideal for premium Pinot Noir. This wine is from the superb 2013 vintage and all the grapes are sourced from Sarah's Vineyard. Hand harvested and destemmed, whole berries went directly into the fermentors where they were cold soaked at 55 degrees then inoculated and fermented with a punch down by hand 3 times a day– a technique to maintain the bright fruit aromas and flavors. Aging was in 100% French oak barrels from the Vosges and Allier forests, 10% new for 11 months. Wine Enthusiast Magazine made this an Editors' Choice scoring it 93 points and saying "This amazing wine can match up against wines double the price. Brawny red berries and wild cherries mix with cut sagebrush, eucalyptus and crushed graphite on the nose. The palate combines bright red, acid-driven raspberry fruit with the darker structure of elderberry. Throw in thyme and bay leaf for the complete package."
Great Pinot for the money!
One word comes to mind when sipping on this Pinot.. Dynamite! Impressive balance and concentration on this wine with all that well developed red cherry, strawberry and hints of minerality, smoke and spice. Acidity is high as well making it quite a food friendly option. Hard to find better at this price point.
