The Hope family helped pioneer the now-thriving category of California white Rhône blends over the past 15 vintages. The majority of the fruit in this blend is from the Santa Lucia Highlands, which benefits from the cooling breezes coming off of Monterey Bay (57% Santa Lucia Highlands 33% Monterey County 10% Paso Robles). The grapes for the 2014 Treana Blanc were whole-cluster pressed and the juice was chilled to 35˚ F to allow the solids to settle. Once cooled, 80% of the juice
was transferred to French oak barrels for fermentation, of which 25% were new
barrels. The Marsanne was barrel fermented separately in neutral oak and after
fermentation, the wine aged on its lees for an additional twelve months. The
remaining 20% of the juice was fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks and
then blended with the barrel-aged wine in December of 2015. The blend aged
together for another four months until bottling in April of 2016. The Wine Advocate scored it 90 points saying "A blend of 45% Viognier, 45% Marsanne and a splash of Roussanne, Treana's 2014 White comes from the central coast and was brought up in 25% new French oak. Fabulously textured, unctuous and rich, yet with good acidity and purity, it offers outstanding notes of buttered citrus, flower oil, marmalade and orange blossom. It's a big, full-flavored white that will shine on the dinner table over the coming year or two." and Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 91 points saying "Lavish yet not overdone aromas of vanilla, plumeria, dried banana and yellow peach arise from the glass in this blend of 45% Viognier, 45% Marsanne and 10% Roussanne. There is a honeyed character to the palate, along with banana, mango and buttered guava bread, proving quite tropical yet very welcoming." and Wine Review Online scored it 92 saying "I confess that at first sip I wasn’t sure how much I liked this wine (a blend of Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne), but as with many love affairs, that initial ho-hum impression was quickly replaced by deep affection. “Blanc” wasn’t at fault for my initial hesitation -- I just hadn’t been paying attention, and this is a wine that will reward you with masses of interesting and complex flavors if you give it a chance. It has the floral nuances one might expect from its Viognier element, plus fresh fig and pineapple components and a subtle suggestion of minerality, more texture than flavor probably, but very savory and cleansing. Out of amorous curiosity I refrigerated the open bottle overnight, in fact I ended up keeping it for three days, treating myself to a glass (or two) every night mostly out of curiosity to see how the open wine would age. While some of the fruitiness slowly disappeared over the days it nonetheless displayed interesting and refreshing new gradations of flavor and personality with each tasting. And then, sadly, it was gone."
