Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2010 Poggio Abate, La Poderina
Founded in 1988, La Poderina is located in the Castelnuovo dell'Abate zone of Montalcino, an area noted for the elegance and balance of its grapes. The estate resides southeast of Montalcino's historic town center and consists of consists of 120 acres. Specialized in the cultivation of Sangiovese Grosso, La Poderina has 25 acres of vineyards dedicated to the production of Brunello including the Poggio Abate where the older vine grapes for this Riserva are sourced. Winemaker Ricardo Cotarella ferments in stainless steel tanks using selected yeasts with maceration on the skins for 15-20 days. The wine is then aged 15 months in French oak tonneaux, followed by 15 months in large Slavonian oak casks; after six months in stainless steel, it is bottle refined for 24 months before release. The Wine Advocate scored it 94 points saying "Packaged with a thick wax capsule, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio Abate opens to a dark color and smooth consistency. The bouquet is redolent of bright cherry, cassis, dried blackberry, spice and tobacco. Like many of the best wines from this vintage, the nose is initially slow to open. Once it does, it shows elegance and power in equal measure. Despite the thick glass bottle and dramatic packaging, this wine is much more feminine and elegant than you may expect. It is full of pretty surprises." and James Suckling scored it 95 saying "Very dense and rich red with dried berry, strawberry and sliced chocolate character. Full body with chewy tannin mouthfeel. Long and juicy finish. Better in 2019 when the tannins soften." Very Limited!
