Claret 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Diamond Collection, California, Francis Ford Coppola
Francis Ford Coppola calls this wine his "prize offering." It's a classic Bordeaux blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc snd 1% Merlot. The grapes are sourced from Napa, Sonoma, El Dorado and the Coppola Estate. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 12 months. From 2014, the "dream vintage", it scored 90 points in the Critics Choice Competition and Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 90 points saying "This is a big, beefy wine that smells smoky and black-cherry-like and tastes full, bold and firmly tannic. It layers smoky, meaty notes over cranberry and tart cherry flavors, with hints of dark chocolate and cardamom. It is well balanced, muscular in mouthfeel and should improve with time through 2020 at least." For under $20 this Coppola Diamond Collection Claret is a true gem.
