Nuits St. Georges, Les Damodes 1er Cru 2014 Domaine De Vougeraie
Domaine de la Vougeraie is the Domaine owned by the Boisset family that showcases their own estate vineyards. ince 2006, Pierre Vincent has been the head winemaker at Domaine de la Vougeraie. In both 2010 and 2014, Pierre Vincent won the IWC Red Winemaker of the Year. Pierre obtained his Enologist National Diploma from the University of Burgundy in Dijon. He started out worked for Olivier Leflaive and then Antonin Guyon. At Domaine de la Vougeraie he is in charge of winemaking and biodynamic farming. Nuits-Saint-Georges is said to have a strong, unbridled personality. The Premier Cru Les Damodes is the town’s northernmost vineyard and borders Vosne-Romanée. The estate plot is about two acres on a steep slope facing east for good sun exposure. The vines average 30 years of age, planted back in the mid 1980’s. Grapes were sorted first in the vineyard and a second time on the sorting table when they arrived at the winery. They were completely destemmed but not crushed (they were left whole) and were gravity-fed into tanks. Maceration lasted a total of 23 days including 5 days of cold maceration. Fermentation used indigenous yeasts. The wine aged for 16 months in 50% new French oak barrels and bottled unfined with a light filtration. The wine shows berry and spice aromas with hints of violet. On the palate it's focused and racy with cherry, pomegranate and brown spice, round tannins and persistent fruit on the finish.
