The land on which the Castello dei Rampolla stands has been owned by the family since 1739. In the mid-1960's with the dream of creating a great wine, Alceo di Napoli Rampolla planted vineyards and produced Chianti Classico. Not long after, Alceo got the idea to ask for the help of a great winemaker Giacomo Tachis, the creator of Sassicaia and one of the first in the region to plant Cabernet Sauvignon and to blend it with Sangiovese. This is what put Castello dei Rampolla on the map and Sammarco is their signature wine. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese aged 12-15 months in French oak barrels. This 2011 is outstanding. Antonio Galloni scored it 95+ saying "The 2011 Sammarco is so youthful it almost tastes like a barrel sample! Dark, rich and inviting, the 2011 possesses notable concentration and depth, with round yet powerful tannins and a surprising level of freshness for the year. A host of black cherry, graphite, smoke, plum and lavender notes accompany the powerful finish. It will be quite some time before the 2011 is ready to drink, but there is plenty to look forward to."
