Cotes Du Rhone 2012 E. Guigal
Guigal's Côtes du Rhone Rouge sets the standard for the appellation. The Côtes du Rhône appellation applies to red, white, and rosé wines from vineyards throughout the Rhône Valley, comprising about 90% of the total production of the region. Quality and style can vary widely. The Guigals select and blend cuvées from over 40 top growers, and their talent lies in the rigorous and exhaustive traveling and tasting they carry out. Ultimately they will select only 1% of all wines they taste for their Cotes du Rhone Rouge: one lot out of every one hundred. Since the 1998 vintage the wine has been based on Syrah, a Northern Rhone approach to a wine that is almost always Grenache-based. This focus on Syrah produces wines of greater aromatic intensity and structure, though it is much more costly to produce given the particularities of growing Syrah in the Southern Rhone. Soils are varied, consisting mainly of sedimentary, limestone and granite, with many pebbles and alluvial deposits. Complex and deceptively age-worthy, Guigal's Côtes du Rhône Rouge is one of the world's greatest wine values. Galloni's Vinous scored this 91 points saying "Deep ruby. Spice- and smoke-accented cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by suggestions of candied violet and cracked pepper. Spicy, energetic and sharply focused on the palate, offering concentrated bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that open up slowly with air. Distinctly northern Rhône in personality and texture, featuring a peppery, floral-dominated finish, smooth tannins and excellent closing thrust and persistence. The quality of this bottling consistently outpaces its price and appellation, and that's especially true in this vintage." and The Wine Advocate scored this 90 points saying "A wine that should be on the market by the time you read this, the 2012 Cotes du Rhone from Guigal is a smokin' value that offers classic southern Rhone notes of peppery herbs, smoked earth and almost chocolatey dark fruits. Medium plus-bodied, concentrated, with both fine tannin and bright acidity, it will deliver the good for at least 5-7 years."

Is it not a fact that Syrah and Grenache are two separate varietals? If so, how can a Syrah be Grenache-based?
A shopper on Jan 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Thanks for the question! Yes, Syrah and Grenache are two separate varietals. This wine is a Syrah-based Cotes du Rhone as opposed to many other Cotes du Rhone wines that are Grenache-based. I hope that clears it up, Cheers!
