Chateau Grenet 2015 Bordeaux, Organic, Sylvain et Christophe
The extraordinary 2015 Bordeaux are just starting to arrive and we've got a winner. This wine is the first offering from innovative negociants, Sylvain et Christophe and though you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, the fact that it's Bordeaux in a Burgundy-shaped bottle tells you something different is going on here. With winemaking in their families going back countless generations these young upstarts broke their centuries-old agreement with the local co-operative to go off on their own and make unique and organic Bordeaux wine. They sourced the grapes from a certified organic vineyard with mature, 20 year old vines, south of St. Emilion. Grapes were carefully sorted at the winery and vinified in stainless steel at low temperatures with a long maceration. The wine was then aged in traditional concrete vats instead of oak barrels. A bold blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Malbec, entered in the Concours de Vins in Paris it scored Gold. Dark and dense with remarkably smooth tannins it shows the lively, bright fruit of this superb vintage along with the balance and intensity of a wine from a much higher station. Drinks beautifully now with brief aeration and in your cellar who knows? For the price this Bordeaux is a no brainer!
If this is what we can look forward to for the 2015 vintage in Bordeaux, we are in for a treat!! High quality Bordeaux feel with forward notes of black cherry, cassis, raspberry and spice. Lovely acidity and firm yet supple tannins make it utterly drinkable as is but it will certainly improve over the next few years as well.
