From Chateau Lagrezette, this wine is the flagship from a new parcel of vineyards the Chateau has acquired. The 48 acre Clos Marguerite de Massaut Vineyard in Landiech is exceptionally located on the 3rd terrace above the Lot River of Cahors. Ancient trees surround the vines, thus creating a natural "Clos". The high quality of the soil here is unique, as are the optimal conditions, due to the southern orientation and immediate proximity of the Lot River, for the production of exceptional Malbec. Since 1989 internationally renowned enologist, Michel Rolland, has worked closely with the team at Lagrezette perfecting their Malbec-based wines. For this 2012 Paragon the grapes were carefully hand-sorted and destemmed. The hand-sorting process is a meticulous process that takes place on 2 sorting tables where all small, green grape parts are identified and removed. The wine underwent a week long cold maceration. When this was completed, alcoholic fermentation began with temperature control and hand punch-downs. Paragon underwent malo-lactic fermentation in new French oak barrels, where it aged for 20 months. The Wine Advocate scored this 95 points saying "The most plush and voluptuous of the lineup, the 2012 Cahors Paragon de Clos Marguerite is 100% Malbec that spent 20 months in new French oak barrels. Inky purple in color, with a bombastic display of creme de cassis, blackberry, blueberry, toasted spice, violets and licorice, this brilliant effort has full-bodied richness, no hard edges and building, fine tannin, none of which distract from its seamless, elegant and silky profile. It firms up quickly once opened, so give it 3-5 years of bottle age. It should have upwards of two decades of longevity." Very Limited!
Having tasted many of the higher end Argentinian Malbecs that are around the price point and higher, I find this to be superior on all levels. It is full of well structured dense, dark fruit but has layers of spice, anise, lavender, smoke, oak and a finish that goes on for days. This is quite simply the most elegant, complex and BEST Malbec I have ever had.
