Hartford Family 2013 Zinfandel Old Vine, Russian River Valley
The 2014 vintage is #10 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2016!
The Hartford Russian River Valley Zinfandel is a blend of old-vine, dry-farmed and low-yielding Zinfandel vineyards from the Russian River Valley. These old vineyards (average vineyard age is over 100 years) offer an impressive articulation of this idiosyncratic varietal. Zinfandel grown in the Russian River Valley is distinctive due to a cool maritime influence. Bright, natural acidity and vibrant fruit aromas and flavors are a result of typically cool, fog-laden
nights and warm days. These dry-farmed vineyards, planted on low-fertility soils, consistently produce wines of exceptional density and extraction.
The grapes are all hand harvested with hand sorting of both clusters and berries at the winery. After a pre-fermentation cold soak fermentation begins with indigenous yeast in small open-top fermenters. Then the wine is aged for 9 months in all French oak barrels and bottled unfined and unfiltered. 2014 is one of Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2016. Vinous scored this 2013 93 points saying "The 2013 Zinfandel Russian River Valley is an attractive, boisterous wine to drink now and over the next few years. Dark red cherry, raspberry, spice, and mint inform the juicy finish. The 2013 is gracious, inviting and pretty much impossible to resist."
